Why Use Podcasts in High School English?
Teachers should incorporate more podcasts into their curriculum because they offer a dynamic way to engage students with diverse perspectives and real-world issues, making learning more interactive and relatable. By listening to podcasts, students can develop critical listening skills and improve their ability to analyze information, preparing them for academic and professional success.
Plus, podcasts provide a convenient and accessible way for students to explore topics beyond traditional classroom materials, fostering curiosity and independent learning.

Limetown
More than 300 people disappeared from Limetown, TN ten years ago. Your students can join Lia Haddock in discovering the truth about this mystery. Inside the guide, you will find my top tips on how to use it in your classroom.
Solve
The Solve podcast is an interactive podcast that puts the listener into the role of detective in a murder mystery. These crimes are based off of real life stories. With this tool, you can take your student’s inference and evidence gathering skills to a whole new level! There are always 4 main suspects and you go through the clues each one gives to determine who the true murderer is.
In the guide, I share the 2 episodes that are clean for the classroom and your students will go bananas for! Just check out this video to see what I mean.
Scoundrel
In the guide you will hear all about “Scoundrel: History’s Forgotten Villains”. This is a historical podcast that tells the stories of the rapscallions through time. The episode I suggest using is the perfect addition to your study of The Great Gatsby. It’s all about the real-life person, George Remus and you will easily see how he was the inspiration behind the character Jay Gatsby!
Scattered
“Scattered” is a podcast where comedian Chris Garcia tells the story of his recently deceased father, an immigrant who struggled when he came to the US. If you want to develop empathy in your students or expose them to one immigrant’s experience, this is a great way to do it. Missy over at A Better Way to Teach shares some ideas on how to use this in your classroom in this guide!
The Happiness Lab
“The Happiness Lab” is filled with so many episodes for SEL goodness that can be a lovely addition to your classroom! In the The Ultimate Podcast Guide for High School English Teachers, I share one of my favorite episodes that talks about how certain friendships can help us reach our biggest goals and desires. It is a fantastic way to lead into George and Lennie (and others later on) have such a strong friendship because of their common dream to one day own their own farm and work for themselves.
Akimbo
Akimbo is an ancient word, from the bend in the river or the bend in an archer’s bow. It’s become a symbol for strength, a posture of possibility, the idea that when we stand tall, arms bent, looking right at it, we can make a difference. Akimbo’s a podcast about our culture and about how we can change it. Danielle Hicks at English Classroom Architect likes to use two episodes in her classroom to talk about AI usage. You will find out which two and how she uses them to approach this timely discussion of standing out in the age of AI with her students!
