Wondering what a world literature high school curriculum could look like? Curious how you can build world literature thematic units? Are you trying to get together your World Literature pacing guide? You have come to the right place!
This guide will take you through 6 thematic units to make sure your World Literature year is rich, dynamic, and highly engaging. As well as plenty of independent activities, project-based learning projects, and assessments.
Here’s a small taste:
Unit 1- This unit is all about mythical heroes from around the world! An in-depth look for 6 weeks on heroes like: Achilles, Perseus, Atalanta, Hua Mulan, Prince Yamato, Beowulf, and Batman!
Unit 2- This unit focuses on the art of suspense. Using classics like The Fall of the House of Usher and modern classics like the podcast Limetown. Add in a plethora of creepy fun writing and your students will be in love!
Unit 3- The art of persuasion. In this unit you can guide your students through Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar and then continue looking at rhetoric and debate in pop culture.
Unit 4- Critical lens theory and fairytales. This unit incorporates critical lens theory to analyze fairy tales from different perspectives, including archetypal, Marxist, feminist, and multicultural lenses. Students engage in reading, watching film adaptations, analyzing characters, completing worksheets, writing essays, and participating in discussions.
Unit 5- King Arthur legends. In this unit, students will delve into the world of King Arthur through a multidimensional exploration of literature and film. A modernized look at Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Neil Gaiman’s “Chivalry” really round out the unit in a fun way.
Unit 6- Love, It’s Complicated. While this mini unit focuses on the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream and other small pieces, the larger umbrella of love can leave you a lot of room for a variety of texts to incorporate other novels for whole class reading or book clubs
